Hapkido: Falling Back in Love

Remembering hapkido

I had the opportunity to teach some hapkido techniques to a small group of women. I had so much fun remember and trying out these techniques. I forgot how much I loved it.

I started training this martial art after I received my 1st degree black belt in taekwondo. I was ready for something new, and my school also offered hapkido, so I thought why not.

Hapkido is a Korean grappling martial art. It has escapes, joint locks and manipulations, safety falls, lifts, and throws. It’s an art that favors the small but is doable for people of all sizes. Training in hapkido also helped me pass physics in high school.

It helped me to feel strong and in control. Taekwondo Developed my confidence and strength, hapkido helped me develop control and bravery.

I did not realize how much I missed practicing it until I had the opportunity to share some of it. I also didn’t realize how rusty I was. Flexibility in the joints is very important for training in hapkido and is something that I have neglected.

Since I got back into training Taekwondo, I have been yearning to find and continue training in hapkido. Finding a teacher has been difficult, and training it without a partner, while possible, is a little difficult. You can practice the movements, but without a body to see if the motions have an effect, mastering said motions can take an extended time. But I think the time has come to start dusting off the cobwebs on some of these techniques and starting self-training again.

What’s something you forgot you loved until it crossed your path again?

Till next time, keep kicking.
