Competing in your first tournament. They are stressful, participating can be scary and they are totally worth it.
Tournaments are like testing, but instead of moving up, you get a medal…maybe. Regardless, it is a test of your skill, and you will only get better from participating.
I was a scaredy-cat when I was younger, and I wish a started doing tournaments as soon as I could. That would be my recommendation if you can as they are not cheap. At least do one if you have the opportunity. They provide you with the ability to present your skills to other masters and greatly grow from their feedback and overall experience. There is also the confidence boost, and adrenaline rush when performing for those you do not know and in front of a crowd.
Tournaments can vary in size and prestige. For instance, some may have a grand championship competition while others may just have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd based on the ring.
My first tournament in taekwondo was after I received my 1st degree and switched to another martial arts. So, yes, I was not even training in taekwondo when I participated in my first taekwondo tournament. It was a small tournament, and I was nervous, but excited. It was kind of like the feeling I get from testing but without the pressure of failing as long as I tried my best.
The best part of tournament was the energy and the people. Yeah, the trophy is a great perk, and it was an amazing feeling to get one, but above all else tournaments are meant to be a learning experience. To perform in front of other master and work/see how others have practiced and trained. I feel it is important to participate in at least one tournament before black belt and one after. If for nothing else the experience and to say, you did it. Who knows you may love it.
Now when is the best time to compete? As soon as you can. Any belt can compete. Usually green and up for sparing and yellow and up for forms. Breaking is usually open to all. Like i said, I think you should do 1 as a color belt and 1 as a black belt, becuase they are held to different standards. How many you compete it is up to you.
Competing in tournaments is not for everyone, and if its not for you there are many other things you can focus on for your training, like promotion.
Happy Kicking.
